Frank Banfield Park
A project to develop a new community garden through extensive local resident and stakeholder engagement on the site of former derelict playground. Since completion in 2023, the garden has been managed by Hammersmith Community Gardens Association who provide weekly food-growing, gardening and horticultural training sessions for the local community. The garden includes raised bed allotments, green roof shipping container building including accessible toilet, tool store and meeting room, raised wildlife pond, access paths, orchard trees, seasonal gardens and wildflower meadow. A sculptural 35 metre habitat wall provides a unique backdrop to the garden, constructed with the local community using reclaimed materials, bird boxes and bug hotels.
A Tiny Forest was delivered as part of the project in association with Earthwatch UK, creating a dense woodland planted in a small area, recreating the natural structure of a forest in miniature. The forest is planted using the Miyawaki method developed in Japan, providing and important education resource for local schools.
