St Jude’s Street Gardens
Extensive refurbishment of a much-loved community park in Islington, delivered as part of the Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood masterplan to create a greener, healthier borough. The project brief, options appraisal and detailed designs were developed through an extensive programme of community engagement. Play concepts were co-developed with local schools through model-making and drawing workshops, informing the design of two large bespoke timber climbing structures incorporating nets, decks, elevated platforms, slides and lookout points overlooking the adjacent railway line.
Alongside improved access throughout the site, the proposals included the creation of a new community garden for food growing and an outdoor classroom for local schools, transforming an area of the park previously affected by anti-social behaviour. The community garden is now supported by The Garden Classroom, which provides weekly food-growing sessions and environmental education for local residents.
